Hugues Vassal, one of the founders of Gamma, is in better shape than ever. He has just published, with Jacques Pessis, a book about Edith Piaf, with 280 photographs taken in the 1950s and 60s. He covered Edith Piaf for France Dimanche and later for Gamma, becoming one of its directors after the partners split up.When Raymond Depardon had taken over he entrusted Vassal with the agency’s direction.
Like all the photographers who passed through Gamma, especially those of the first team, the story of the agency is close to his heart. But time has passed, along with all the booze-soaked parties. Today he’s a quiet and peaceful man looking back on his past and and revisiting the work of his youth.
Even after all these years, speaking of the Gamma split, his tone is still curt. Hubert Henrotte left, “like a thief in the night,” says Vassal. “He had planned it all .”
